The best pan to cook in over an open fire are Cast Iron pots and pans. They can withstand the heat and will not get ruined. So collect some wood and put it into a pit and start your fire. You can cook anything that you normally would cook over an open fire. The cast iron pots also spread the heat out evenly. | |

| | I need help identifying this piece of OLD cast iron. Railroad part? Sleigh part? | | Let me give you a little history. My dad found a piece of 35 pound cast iron in the mountains of Wyoming. It says "Sweet 1875" on one end and "Patent Oct 19" on the other. It weighs about 35 pounds and is about 1 foot long and and about 6 inches thick.
I have tried to do research on it and not having much luck.
What I DID find.. doesn't help me much because it doesn't show the full picture. What I found was that it MIGHT be a sleigh part. The matching wording leads one to believe it is a part of a sleigh used for heavy cargo.
However, I posted these pics (which I will have to post as I reply to all of you) in the ebay community forum, some there say it MIGHT be a railroad "re-railer" used to put derailed cars back on track. It would be spiked into a tie, and then the train would be pulled forward and the re-railer would guide the wheel back on the track.

| | My cast iron stove | | I actually have taken three photos of this stove that I have considered selling. I will post others as replies come in, but I was curious about going about selling something like this. I tried to get an appraisal, but the site I went to wanted 25.00 to appraise it. I do know that this same stove was on Antique Roadshow a few years ago and the apprasial was 2.000..Mine is missing a door though, (I still might be able to find it, just need a metal detector, long story), and it has been a few years..
Does anyone know anything about antiques like this? It is a model that salesmen in the fifties I believe, would take from door to door. It was modeled after the real thing, so people could actually see what the product was on a smaller scale.. | |
| | Why cast iron cookware is SUPERIOR to anything you've got in the cupboard: | | This list is by no means exhaustive, but rather a quick 10 points as to why you're better off buying cast iron than any of that fancy new stuff. Remember kids, NEW TECHNOLOGY, does NOT mean Better technology. (Was the cd really all that much better than vinyl?)
The List:
1. It's non stick, if you know what your doing.
2. It lasts forever, well longer than you anyway.
3. It costs way less than Mario's stuff or All Clad.
4. You can cook anything with it.
5. No noxious fumes if heated empty.
6. Easy to care for, NO SOAP NEEDED for washing.
7. It will come in handy if you have a spider around that needs coaxing out of the house.
8. My Grandma swore by the stuff, yours probably did too, unless you're 18 or something like that.
9. Did I mention it's cheap?
10. You can buy it anywhere.
Look if you are just starting out and need some gear for the kitchen, you can't do better for your bucks than a 10 inch skillet and a dutch oven. That will cover most of your needs for under about 30 bucks.
If you have the mega bucks and wants to spend them, by all means buy the same stuff in allclad or mario and help the economy out, your $300.00 will go a very long way to making a dent... | |
| | Do you like cooking with cast iron? | | I love cat iron. I have several pieces in two different varieties. I have techniques cast iron which has a white enamalled finish on the inside (mine are tangerine colored on the outside) which means it doesn't need to be seasoned and clean up is a breeze. I love them. I have a rectangle roaster/baker, an everyday pan with a lid, an everyday frying pan, a square fryng pan and a square grill pan. The other peices I have are Paula Deen's cast iron. These are hammered finish on the outside and preseasoned on the inside. I have a big chicken fryer, a pot with a lid and bail handle, and a sqaure pot with a lid. I love these as well. I have a lot of pots and pans because we love to cook and different things require different pots or pans for propper preperation. Do you like cast iron? | |
